The first “Go Green with EPAcoin” initiative exceeded expectations

Thousands of small electronic devices are still lying around in our homes, gathering dust in drawers, cupboards or boxes, where they are eventually forgotten but never disappear. Although technology is changing rapidly and new devices appear every year, the old ones often remain at home with no purpose, even if they have long since stopped working. The initiative “Go Green with EPAcoin” showed that residents are keen to get involved when sustainability is accompanied by a clear and appealing incentive.
This September, the initiative “Go Green with EPAcoin” was held for the first time at the Shopping Centre CUP. During the initiative, residents could bring their unused small electronic devices to the information centre of the Shopping Centre CUP, dispose of them in a special EPA container and receive an “EPAcoin” voucher worth EUR 5. The voucher could be exchanged for food or drinks at CUP shopping centre cafés and restaurants. Over the entire duration of the campaign, as many as 5,000 “EPAcoin” vouchers were distributed to residents, which served as a clear proof of its success.

Ona Nevinskienė, Manager of the Shopping Centre CUP, says she never doubted for a moment that the initiative “Go Green with EPAcoin” would be a success. According to her, people got so actively involved that the campaign even had to be ended a week earlier than planned. Small electronic devices were brought in by families, employees from nearby offices, and older people, whilst staff also noticed groups of friends who had decided to say goodbye to their old devices together. All of this shows that the community fully understands the value of initiatives of this kind. The devices brought to the campaign were very varied: from old mobile phones and beauty tools to keyboards and small household appliances.
