Bumblauskas – about “Kukučio Lietuva” (Hoopoe’s Lithuania) and why he would feel sorry for the demolished Sports Palace
“We don’t have a normal concept of the history of Soviet Lithuania,” Professor Alfredas Bumblauskas told LRT.lt when he came to congratulate the CUP shopping centre on the occasion of its 50th anniversary.
The former Central Department Store (now CUP shopping centre) is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year.
Located on the right bank of the Neris River, the building took its real shape in 1974, when the project by architect Zigmantas Liandzbergis was implemented. However, before that, the architect brothers Algimantas and Vytautas Nasvyčiai outlined a vision for the right bank of the Neris River – the future centre of Vilnius, vibrant with life.
On the occasion of the anniversary, a meeting with the historian A. Bumblauskas was organised and a photography exhibition was opened. In it, images of the contemporary Vilnius are intertwined with archival photographs.
