World Down Syndrome Day

21 March, 2026

Today, on 21 March, marks World Down Syndrome Day. To mark the day, the “Colourful Socks” campaign is taking place – mismatched pairs of socks have become a globally recognised symbol of tolerance. They serve as a reminder of the uniqueness brought about by just one extra chromosome. Down’s syndrome is a genetic condition in which a person has an extra 21st chromosome.

The Association of People with Down’s Syndrome and their Carers, together with the well-known Vilnius photographer Vincas Alesius, presents the unique social project “I Am Part of Vilnius”. This project is a photography exhibition aimed at drawing public attention to a socially marginalised group, i.e. people with Down’s syndrome, and their desire to be accepted as full members of the city’s community.

Visit the exhibition, take a photo of yourself wearing different socks, share the photo and spread the message of diversity and acceptance. You could win a pair of socks as a gift!

You can buy the different socks at www.kalbakojines.lt. By buying these socks, you are supporting the Association of People with Down’s Syndrome and their Carers.

The exhibition on the 4th floor of the Shopping Centre CUP will run until 23 April.
