“Ukrainian National Costume. History and War Tokens”

On 30 January, at 17:00, we invite you to the lecture “Ukrainian National Costume. History and War Tokens”. During the lecture, we will take a closer look at the costumes in the collection, which are based on elements of Ukrainian national costume of the early 20th century. During the lecture you will learn more about:

The history of Ukrainian national costume and its regional differences;

Key components of the costume: the embroidered shirt, the coat / skirt, the corset, the different kinds of jewellery and types of headwear;

The role of Ukrainian national costume today and how it changed during the war will be discussed.

More about Ganna Dovbakh: Ganna holds a Master’s degree in Social Psychology and Cultural Studies. She is a researcher, instructor, and project manager working in the field of coping with the aftermath of the Soviet occupation in Eastern European and Central Asian public perception and health and social care systems.

Since 1997, Ganna has been participating in community self-organisation, cultural and civic education in Ukraine. In recent years, she has been actively involved in the development of Ukrainian volunteer initiatives in Vilnius, organising charity fairs, cultural and educational events and discussions. Since 2021, she has been volunteering as a teacher at a Ukrainian Saturday school in Vilnius.

For the last 10 years, Ganna has been passionate about the preservation and research of Ukrainian national costumes. Her private collection includes over 30 antique embroidered costumes and several full outfits, with a particular focus on traditional attire from the Poltava, Chernihiv (her family's homeland), and Kyiv areas.

Since 2017, Ganna has been leading the Eurasian Harm Reduction Association (EHRA), which brings together activists from 29 countries. Since the beginning of the full-scale invasion, she has coordinated support to Ukrainian organisations and refugees, ensuring access to medical and social assistance.

A human rights activist, feminist and mother of a grown-up daughter, Ganna has been living in Vilnius since 2014.

The lecture will take place on the 4th floor of CUP SC, in “The Art of the Battlefield” exhibition space.
